Twelve-year-old Sumiko is used to being the only Japanese girl in her class - After the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour the local people start to distrust all Japanese people and Sumiko and her family find themselves shipped to an internment camp on an Indian reservation where she meets a young Mohave boy.
